Sri Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple (Sarpavaram): Heritage, Timings & Darshan Guide
📋 Quick Facts & Directory Essentials
The ancient shrine of Sri Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple, located in the sacred village of Sarpavaram on the northern periphery of Kakinada, stands as one of the most revered Vaishnavite pilgrimage shrines in the Godavari delta. Counted among the five historic Pancha Bhavanarayana Kshetras of Andhra Pradesh (alongside Bapatla, Ponnur, Bhavadevarapalli, and Pattiseema), Sarpavaram holds deep spiritual significance linked to sage Agastya, serpent king Takshaka, and the divine penance of Lord Brahma.
Mythological Origins & The Legend of Sarpavaram
According to ancient Sthala Purana texts, Sage Kasyapa had two wives: Kadru (mother of serpents) and Vinata (mother of Garuda). Following a bitter bet, the serpent sons deceived Vinata, resulting in great enmity between Garuda and snakes. In the subsequent Kaliyuga era, King Janamejaya performed the terrible Sarpa Yaga (Snake Sacrifice) to avenge his father Parikshit's death by snakebite. To cleanse the universe of the resulting curses, Sage Agastya consecrated Lord Vishnu as Bhavanarayana Swamy at this holy spot. The village derived its historic name from this legend—initially known as Sarpa-Varam (the booned sanctuary of serpents).
Chola and Eastern Chalukyan Architectural Grandeur
Beyond its spiritual sanctity, the Sarpavaram temple complex is a masterpiece of South Indian temple architecture:
- Rajagopuram and Mukhamandapa: A grand stone gateway tower adorned with intricate stucco carvings leads into a pillared assembly hall supported by granite columns featuring sculpted lions (Yalis), floral medallions, and epic relief panels from the Bhagavata Purana.
- Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum): Houses the majestic Moolavirat of Lord Bhavanarayana Swamy carved out of polished black stone, depicted in a standing posture with four divine arms holding the Shankha, Chakra, Gada, and Abhaya mudra, flanked by Sri Devi and Bhu Devi.
- Patala Ganga Pushkarini: The sacred stepwell located in front of the temple. Devotees take ritual purification dips in these mineral-rich waters before entering the inner prakaram for special abhishekam rites.
